삐걱삐걱 굴러가는 캄보디아의 향수 씨클로

씨클로는 프랑스 식민 시절에 생겨난 3륜 자전거 택시를 말한다. 씨클로는 1990년대 만 해도 가장 흔하고 인기있던 교통수단이다. 그러나 이후 툭툭과 같은 새로운 교통수단이 생겨나자 이제는 프놈펜 시내에서 씨클로를 찾아보기가 어려워졌다. 이제는 껀달 시장이나 오르싸이 시장, 트마이 시장 등 재래시장 주변에서만 발견할 수 있다. 장을 본 아주머니들이 시장에서 집까지 이동하기 위해 많이 사용하고 있다.

씨클로의 앞에는 쿠션으로 만은 편한 좌석이 있다. 발을 얹는 곳에는 짐을 올려놓을 수 있하다. 원래 씨클로는 1인용이지만 캄보디아 사람들은 아이들을 무릎에 앉혀 4~5명 씩 타기도 한다. 외국인들도 조금만 낑겨 앉으면 두 명 정도는 거뜬히 태울 수 있다.

씨클로가 이제는 사라져가는 구식 교통수단인 것은 사실이지만, 많은 사람들이 옛시대의 향수를 느껴보기 위해 씨클로를 체험해 보려 하고 있다. 한국 사람들은 씨클로가 느리고 답답하고 이상하다고 생각하며 신체가 전면 노출되기 때문에 굉장히 위험하다고 생각하기도 하지만 최근 유럽계 외국인들은 씨클로 특유의 편안함을 느끼며 독특한 체험을 하기도 한다. 씨클로를 타고 프놈펜 시내를 느리고 조용히 다녀보면 평소에는 빠르게 스쳐 지나쳐 버린 다양한 삶의 현장들을 접해볼 수 있다.

지난 1999년 씨클로보호협회가 결설됐다. 이 단체는 현재 관광객들을 상대로 씨클로 투어를 운영하고 있다. 시내를 돌아다니다 보면 가끔 연두색 티셔츠에 검정색 바지, 팜 나무로 엮어 만든 밀짚모자를 쓴 씨클로 운전수들이 모여 있는 것을 찾아볼 수 있는데, 외국인 관광객들로부터 한 시간에 $2.5의 가격으로 시내 투어를 하고 있다.

프놈펜 시내에는 전업 씨클로 운전수들도 있지만, 이 중 일부는 시골에서 농한기 때 부수입을 벌기 위해 상경한 사람들도 있다. 이들은 하루에 3000리엘의 대여료로 씨클로를 빌려 사용한다. 씨클로 운전수들은 하루 평균 10,000리엘의 수익을 올리고 있다.
