수천 개의 고대사원이 숨 쉬고 있는 역사의 고장. 조각인들의 얼이 깃들어 있는 예술의 고장, 바로 껌뽕톰주입니다.

껌뽕톰주는 지도상에서 캄보디아의 정중앙에 위치해 있다. 껌뽕톰주는 북서쪽으로 시엠립, 북쪽으로는 쁘레아뷔히어, 북동쪽으로는 스떵뜨라엥, 동쪽으로는 끄라째, 남쪽으로는 껌뽕짬과 껌뽕톰 등 여러 주와 맞닿아 있으며 서쪽으로는 똔레쌉 호수가 있다. 껌뽕톰주의 총면적은 13,814㎢이고 전체 인구는 733,870명이다. 껌뽕톰주는 8개 군, 81개면, 731개 마을로 나뉜다. 프놈펜으로부터의 거리는 126km 이고 프놈펜과 시엠립을 잇는 6번국도로 연결된다.

‘껌뽕톰’이라는 명칭의 뜻은 ‘큰 항구’(‘껌뽕’-항구/포구, ‘톰’-크다)이다. 이곳에 큰 항구가 있었을 것이라고 착각하기 쉽지만, 사실 ‘껌뽕톰’이란 이름은 ‘껌뽕 뿌어 톰’(큰 뱀의 항구)이라는 말에서 유래됐다. 아주 오래 전 똔레쌉 호수와 연결되는 스떵 싸엔 강변에 큰 구렁이 두 마리가 살고 있던 동굴이 있었다. 당시 사람들은 불교의 법회일마다 이 큰 구렁이를 볼 수 있었기 때문에 이 구렁이를 신성시 했다고 한다. 그리하여 사람들은 이 지역을 큰 뱀이 살고 있는 항구, ‘껌뽕 뿌어 톰’이라고 불렀으며, 요즘에는 ‘껌뽕 톰’이라고 줄여서 부른다.

껌뽕톰 주 지역 주민의 85% 이상은 농민이고, 5% 정도는 어업에 종사하고 있다. 껌뽕톰은 호수, 강, 열대우림, 산지의 경치와 함께 어우러진 200여개가 넘는 고대 사원이 곳곳에 산재하고 있어 관광지로서 발전할 수 있는 잠재성을 갖고 있다. 껌뽕톰 지역은 똔레쌉 호수의 범람지대에 위치해 있기 때문에 높은 어획량을 자랑하고 있다. 최근 껌뽕톰 지역에서는 쌀농사 이외에도 캐쉬넛과 같은 환금작물의 재배가 늘어나고 있는 추세이다.

껌뽕톰주는 각종 석재 조각으로 유명하다. 이곳의 기술자들은 껌뽕톰주에 위치한 프놈 썬뚝(썬뚝 산)에서 가져온 천연 사암, 천연 백색 사암 등을 손으로 직접 조각해서 실내장식품, 불상 등을 만들어 낸다. 최근 몇 년 간 이곳의 석재의 품질을 인정받아 건축용 석재 채석 또한 빠른 속도로 발달하고 있다.

껌뽕톰에서 가장 자연적이면서 문화적인 곳은 바로 프놈 썬뚝(썬뚝 산)이다. 프놈 썬뚝은 껌뽕톰 주도시에서 17km 정도 떨어져 있다. 프놈 썬뚝은 껌뽕톰 주에서 가장 신성한 산으로 여겨지고 있다. 프놈 썬뚝의 산허리에 있는 바위에는 많은 불상이 부조로 새겨져 있다. 프놈 썬뚝은 캄보디아에 있는 산 중에서 고산에 속하는데 산 정상으로 연결되는 809개의 계단은 평지에만 익숙한 캄보디아 사람들에게는 큰 부담이 되는 곳이다. 프놈 썬뚝은 이 일대에서 가장 멋진 일몰의 경치를 볼 수 있는 곳이기에 많은 사람들이 해질녘이 되면 정상에 오른다.

껌뽕톰 주의 최대 유적지이자 관광지로서의 잠재성이 높은 곳은 ‘쁘라삿 썸보 쁘레이 꼭’이다. 이곳은 껌뽕톰 주도시로부터 35km 떨어진 곳에 위치해 있는데 7세기 초(첸라왕조) 경 3,000헥타 부지에 지어진 고대의 도시로 총 120여개의 사원이 곳곳에 세워져 있다. 사원을 둘러싸고 있는 담벽, 연못 및 각종 종교의식을 거행하던 장소들이 사원 주변을 감싸고 있으며 밀림 속에서 절경을 만들어내기 때문에 매년 이곳의 사원을 찾는 관광객이 늘고 있다.
